Wind Energy in India

The wind project is promoting the generation of renewable energy throughwind turbines in a province in central India. This reduces the use of fossil fuels and supports sustainable development in the region with a variety of measures and programmes.

Project Standard: Gold Standard VER

Project Description

Prior to the project, the region of Madhya Pradesh in India had covered its electricity needs with energy from the national grid. Conventional electricity in India is CO2-intensive, as most of the energy is produced by burning fossil fuels. Alongside the lack of financial resources, bureaucratic hurdles often stand in the way of projects to promote renewable energy in India.

As part of the wind project, 67 modern wind turbines were installed by a private company in a district in central India, generating 176 GWh of renewable electricity in total. The renewable electricity produced in this way replaces a portion of the conventional electricity from fossil fuels in the region’s power grid. It thereby contributes to reducing CO2 emissions and stimulating local economic growth.

The project has already created many new jobs and facilitated social progress. This not only improves the livelihood of the local population but also directly ensures that the project is firmly rooted in the region.

In addition, the project contributes to sustainable development in the region with specific measures and programmes for environmental and social aspects.

Social and Economic Benefits

  • The transfer of new technologies and expertise creates many specialised jobs.
  • The substantial reduction in the need for fossil fuel reduces the dependence on foreign countries and leads to a more positive trade balance for the Indian economy.
  • The project gives priority to local commerce and thereby supports regional companies.
  • There is also a training programme to teach the local population about technological applications.
  • Self-help groups and specific programmes for women address the topics of women’s rights, social equality, health and violence.
  • Through education and health programmes, things such as teaching materials and scholarships for schools, sanitary facilities and improved water supply infrastructures are provided.

Environmental Aspects

  • The production of renewable energy in the project region has made people more aware of the potential of renewable resources.
  • The project is creating more diversification in energy production.
  • An environmental protection programme has been launched in the region (tree planting, transfer of knowledge on rainwater use and cultivation methods to prevent droughts, drinking water management).
