Carbon offset projects either prevent the emission of greenhouse gases (avoidance) or remove them from the atmosphere and store them permanently (sequestration), for example by expanding renewable energy production or reforestation. To ensure the effectiveness of carbon offset projects, they are developed using internationally recognised methodologies and specific standards and are validated by external verifiers. CO₂ certificates are issued for the verified and, depending on the project, annually verified emission reductions.

Initial Requirements

• A concrete project idea with an implementation plan and a demonstrable climate change impact (CO₂ savings).
• An expected CO₂ saving of more than 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
• The project has not yet been implemented (no significant order has been placed) and would not be implemented without the sale of CO₂ certificates (additionality).
• In addition to climate change mitigation, the project contributes to other aspects of sustainable development in the region (e.g. clean energy, biodiversity, education, inclusion, etc.). The project has no negative environmental or social impacts.
• Emission reductions from the carbon offset project are not used or sold elsewhere.
